As Indian agriculture sector totally depends on Monsoon rainfall, even the long range forecast predicting drought creates panic throughout the country.

Below is some short study which is a matter of worry with respect to drought:

“During last 10 years, the Drought years are more compared to earlier period.”

Here is small statistics about drought years:
– In 44 years (1921 – 1964) there were only 3 droughts
– In 23 years (1965 – 1987) there were 10 droughts
– The 10 drought conditions are strongly related with ENSO condition in Pacific sea.

In continuation to above statistics, here are some more facts:
In the last 10 years 2013 was a normal monsoon year (not excess rainfall)
– 2014 and 2015 was drought year
– 2016 was a normal rainfall year (not excess rainfall).

States depending on Monsoon Rainfall:
In Maharashtra the situation is alarming because most of the districts of Madhya Maharashtra (specially North Madhya Maharashtra), Vidarbha and Marathwada were suffering from less rainfall monsoon. In India Maharashtra , Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Gujarat , Telangana and Rajasthan are the state which fully depend up on southwest monsoon rainfall.

1982 was not a good rainfall year and immediately next year in 1983 was flooded year there after followed by 1988 and 1994.

Elnino and Monsoon 2017
This year (2017) El Nino is likely to occur from July or August onward. Where as the position of IOD is neutral during El Nino period. So we should not expect excess rainfall may be it is normal or less than normal.
