Cyclone TAUKTAE – The First Cyclone To Hit Gujarat Since 2000

In South-East and adjoining East Central Arabian sea a cyclone is in developing state. Deep Depression (DD) has already formed. DD is formed when winds speed is in the range of 50 to 61 kmph. The first Cyclone (wind speed exceeding 61 kmph) of the year to be formed by the morning or afternoon of 15th May 2021. The cyclone may be named TAUKTAE (ताउते) pronounced as ‘Taute’. The word ‘TAUKTAE’ is suggested by Myanmar from a new list of 169 names released by the agency last year. Tauktae means Gecko, a lizard known for its distinctive vocalizations.

Cyclone will move northerly for some time and then North Northwest towards Veraval to Porbandar. It is the first cyclone since 2000 to strike the Gujarat coast. From today 14th May till 19th May 2021, fishermen are advised not to go out into the sea. Coastal areas of Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra will observe bad weather due to the movement of this cyclone. Gujarat coast to be on high alert this cyclone may cross between Veraval and Porbandar.

The last cyclone formed during May in the Arabian sea was in May 2018 that is cyclone – Sagar on 18th May 2018 & Mekunu on 25th May 2018.

Cyclone Sagar attained peak intensity in the Gulf of Aden, brushing Yemen’s coast with damaging rainfall.

Cyclone Mekunu made landfall in southwestern Oman, after brushing the Yemeni island of Socotra.
