Deep Depression Update on 30th July 2026

The Deep Depression that formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal has continued its west-northwestward movement across eastern and central India. Since its formation as a low-pressure area on 25 July 2026, the system has gradually intensified into a Depression and later into a Deep Depression, remaining well-marked for several days.
The system has already crossed the Odisha coast and is now moving inland across central India while maintaining sufficient strength to produce widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall over several states.
The forecast indicates that the system will continue moving westwards during the next 24 hours before gradually weakening over interior parts of central India.
Evolution of the Weather System
| Date | System Status |
|---|---|
| 25 July 2026 | Low Pressure Area formed over northwest Bay of Bengal |
| 26 July 2026 | Intensified into a Depression |
| 27 July 2026 | Intensified into a Deep Depression |
| 28 July 2026 | Deep Depression moved inland over eastern India |
| 29 July 2026 | Continued westward movement across central India |
| 30 July 2026 | Deep Depression over central India |
| Next 24 Hours | Expected to move further west-westnorthwest and gradually weaken |
Why is Heavy Rainfall Expected?
Although the centre of the Deep Depression is moving inland, it continues to draw enormous moisture from both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea through strong southwesterly monsoon winds.
This combination results in:
- Strong low-level wind convergence
- Persistent rain bands around the circulation
- Enhanced uplift of moist air
- Continuous cloud formation
- Widespread heavy rainfall over central India
The western and southwestern sectors of inland depressions generally experience prolonged heavy rainfall due to continuous moisture feeding into the system.

Safety Advisory
Residents living in vulnerable areas are advised to:
- Avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.
- Stay away from overflowing rivers, streams and low-lying bridges.
- Monitor updates issued by IMD and local authorities.
- Secure loose outdoor objects and avoid parking vehicles in flood-prone locations.
- Farmers should ensure proper drainage in agricultural fields wherever possible.
WeatherView Analysis
The Deep Depression has remained a well-organised monsoon system for nearly a week, sustaining widespread rainfall across eastern and central India. As it continues its westward journey, the heaviest rainfall is expected over Vidarbha, South Madhya Pradesh, North Madhya Maharashtra and parts of Marathwada during the next 24 hours.
Although gradual weakening is expected after moving further inland, significant rainfall activity is likely to continue until the circulation loses strength.
