The Journey of Low Pressure System from Gulab To Shaheen

The journey of a small system as a cyclonic circulation formed near Myanmar coast on 24th September 2021, It traveled the journey of almost 10 days for thousands of kilometers stretching from one end of Bay of Bengal to the other end of Arabian sea converting into two cyclones – Gulab and Shaheen.

 

Here is the chronology of the events of various phases of Cyclone Gulab & Cyclone Shaheen:

On September 24 – a low-pressure area at 08:30 IST, the system formed from a cyclonic circulation that persisted over the Gulf of Martaban

At 20:30 IST, the IMD upgraded it to a Depression,

 

On September 25th, by 0830 IST, the system was upgraded to a Deep Depression,

At 20:30 IST, the system became Cyclonic Storm, named as Gulab. It was suggested by Pakistan.

 

On 26 September by 22:30 IST, it had crossed 20 km north of Kalingapatnam.

 

On 27 September at 01:00 IST  the IMD downgraded it to a deep depression, the system further weakened into a depression. It maintained its intensity as it traveled westwards until at 14:00 IST, when it weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area over west Vidarbha and traveled towards Gujarat state in West northwestwards direction.

 

Severe Cyclonic Storm Shaheen

On September 29, the remnant of Cyclone Gulab after traveling Gujarat state entered the north-eastern Arabian Sea as a well-marked low-pressure area.

 

On September 30th, at 05:30 IST the next day, the system became Depression over the Gulf of Kutch.

 

On 1st October at 02:30 IST, the IMD upgraded it to a deep depression.

It continued traveling West northwest directions and on 1st October, at 0830 IST, the system intensified into a cyclonic storm called Shaheen, which was named by Qatar.

At 20:30 IST, the IMD further upgraded it to a severe cyclonic storm.

 

On 2nd October, by 11:30 IST, the cyclone developed an Eye.

After traveling west northwestwards direction, at 2330 hrs IST it changed the direction to West southwestward directions.

 

On 3rd October, continuing to travel in West southwestwards direction it made landfall at 2330 hrs IST between, Al Masnaah and Al-Suwaiq, Oman, about 50 miles west-northwest of the capital city of Muscat.at 2330 IST as a Severe Cyclonic Storm over the coast of Oman.

 

On 4th October, after landfall, it weakened into a Cyclonic storm and further into depression at 1130 hrs IST.
